I had the opening of the song The Score from the album The Score on an outgoing answering machine in high school. I had my own phone line in the single story house I shared with my mother. In Olivette, Missouri. I used to sneak out of this house late at night by walking quietly through the front door. My bedroom was on the far side of the house from hers. On these nights, in preparation like some kind of genius, I would park my little Civic hatchback in the street rather than in the driveway.

The Score came out on the same Tuesday at All Eyez on Me. I had to sneak off of our high school’s parking lot. We had a guard named, I believe, Gene, on one lot and then another guard on the other lot. Blockbuster Music didn’t open until after school and I was an impatient shithead who could not even wait until after school to get these two albums and probably I stole one of them. I had been introduced to the first Fugees album from an old 411, I want to say a Back to the Bay contest from a 411 or something. We, one of us, knows. Someone can find the footage. Somewhere I’ve got the VHS somewhere, I am sure of it.

I am fine, honestly. I’m a little more awkward than I once was, okay, but I am also fucking older than you are, most of you. My body cries out in the night like a long-ignored rotten tooth. In the morning I stretch twice, first with both hands cautiously downward, with my fingers yearning for the floor like some anciently promised land, then reaching upward as if for some imaginary object hovering behind and above my head. It is a project of creaks and gusts of pained breath — I am not graceful. Technically I was better when I was younger and jumped off of stairs and onto handrails. But I was always a coward, always. I was a six-stair man at most, maximum six, with marginal tech capabilities but only when I was going slowly. This is the wholly unexceptional story of a young man who skateboards for twenty-four years and along the way starts to think about it too much, and it begins to frighten him.
